In May, we wrote a blog about the connection between Craigslist’s and the Gambino crime syndicate. Namely that the Gambino’s had been busted for trafficking underage girls on Craigslist. Our blog, posted on DailyKos received a good deal of heat from the Kos community. Our favorite was entitled “Piss Off, CL is a great community resource,” as with the rest of the comments, this commentator, demonstrating a soft touch with the written language, justified the sale of children so that lost dogs can be found or an apartment can be rented. Not a single comment displayed an ounce of concern for the children being sold on Craigslist. Come on people, are you serious? Do you really think that because you can buy and sell stuff that you no longer want on Craigslist that it justifies young kids being sold as sex slaves by a company that has not taken a single serious step in the direction of cleaning up their act?

There’s no question that the tech companies in California are the leaders in innovation – almost all of the great technologies that touch your daily life began in California and before you have your morning coffee, you probably interact with a dozen of them. That’s why it’s so disconcerting that here’s a controversy playing out far from the sunny shores of the Golden State that could threaten California’s leadership in innovation. The threat stems from the FCC and the debate over “Net Neutrailty” – a philosophy in the tech world that means information on the internet should be treated equally. But like most things in politics, it’s more complicated than it sounds:

Businesses use them to make contracts, ship mail, even sell your house: Digital signatures are becoming more commonly used in e-commerce because they facilitate business across the state, nation, and globe. But earlier this month, a CA Superior Court judge axed the use of e-signatures for ballot measures.

APP-etizing LAUNCH IN SACRAMENTO
Thank you to those who attended our app launch in Sacramento last month. Appetizers and an iPad door prize drew a crowd at the Pyramid Brewery just steps from our state’s Capitol. Henry Castillo, a legislative fellow from Senator Padilla’s office, won the iPad and the rest of the 70 guests networked with the CALinnovates.org team. Assemblyman Roger Niello spoke warmly of the need for CALinnovates.org’s voice in Sacramento:
“CALinnovates.org is servicing the high tech industry – it’s been a foundation of California’s growth for a few decades and will be for a few decades more, so we are bullish on California and bullish on high tech.”
Also in attendance was CALinnovates.org member Greg Fawcett of Politics-360 who developed our app. If you haven’t already done so, download our app at either the iTunes store or the Blackberry app store and keep up to date with California political and tech news.
